The best theatres in Madrid
Madrid’s theatres await you with venues steeped in centuries of history, impressive architecture and stages that have hosted some of the greatest artists. Of course, an incredible line-up of shows also awaits you. Here are the ones you simply mustn’t miss:
Teatro Real
One of Madrid’s most majestic theatres is the Teatro Real, situated directly opposite the Royal Palace, right in the heart of the city. The building is unique, covering more than 78,000 square metres, and features an impressive main auditorium that is a faithful reproduction of the original, built in 1850.
The Teatro Real mainly stages operas, dance performances, concerts and recitals of the highest artistic and musical quality. The programme is extensive, striking a balance between classical and contemporary works.
Lope de Vega Theatre
Another must-see in the capital is the Lope de Vega Theatre, one of Madrid’s finest venues for musicals. This flagship venue of ‘Madrid’s Broadway’ – the name given to the theatre district on Gran Vía – hosts Madrid’s most famous musical, The Lion King. Other musical theatre classics such as The Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables and Mamma Mia have also been staged at this iconic venue.
Other theatres on Madrid’s Gran Vía specialising in musicals and comedy include the EDP Gran Vía, the Capitol, the Teatro Rialto and the Coliseum. You can discover them by staying at another of Único Hotels’ properties in the capital: The Principal Madrid, our luxurious 5* hotel on Gran Vía.
Lara Theatre
Considered by many to be the most beautiful theatre in Madrid, the Teatro Lara stands out both for its stunning façade and its rich history, having staged performances continuously since 1880. The theatre still houses the royal box once used by Alfonso XII and XIII, who were great patrons of the performing arts.
These days, the Lara offers something for every taste and age group: theatre, music, poetry, comedy… Every form of artistic expression has a place in this unique venue.
Teatros del Canal
One of Madrid’s newest theatres, Teatros del Canal opened in 2009 with the aim of becoming a leading European venue for performance and creativity, welcoming visitors from all over the world. Its four auditoriums host all kinds of artistic disciplines across some 37,000 square metres, including dance, theatre, flamenco, opera and circus. This modern theatre offers something for everyone, including a wide range of children’s shows.
Teatro de la Zarzuela
As its name suggests, the Teatro de la Zarzuela is dedicated to a single genre… the zarzuela. This style of musical theatre, which includes both spoken and sung sections, is a significant reflection of Spanish culture, which is why a venue dedicated exclusively to it was created in the 1950s. Designated a National Monument in the 1990s, the building has been completely renovated and harbours a rich history, having been completely destroyed by fire in the early 20th century.
