San Isidro Festival in Madrid

If you’re wondering which are the most important festivals in Madrid, they are undoubtedly the Fiestas de San Isidro Labrador, the city’s patron saint’s day celebrations par excellence.

These are days filled with tradition, music, dancing and fine food – the perfect time to experience the true essence of the capital and get a close-up look at the party-loving side of Madrid’s residents.

In this article, we’ll tell you all about the San Isidro Festival in Madrid: when it takes place, the most typical activities and events, and where to stay if you want to experience it in person.

When are the San Isidro festivities?

The San Isidro Festival is held every year in mid-May and lasts for several days.

However, the official date of the festival is 15 May, the feast day of Saint Isidore the Farmer, the patron saint of Madrid.

Where are the San Isidro Festivities held?

Madrid is buzzing with events during San Isidro, although the main venues are the Pradera de San Isidro – which gives its name to the patron saint – the Plaza Mayor, Matadero and the Vistillas Gardens.

San Isidro Festival Programme

The programme for the San Isidro Festival combines traditional celebrations, such as the pilgrimage to the Pradera de San Isidro, with a packed line-up of musical performances, concerts and shows taking place across the city. Here are some of the events you won’t want to miss:

Opening Address and Parade of the Giants and Bigheads

This parade, which marks the start of the San Isidro Festival alongside the traditional opening speech, usually sets off from the Plaza de la Villa and winds its way through the centre of Madrid. As well as the traditional figures seen in the parades, it is common to see the people of Madrid dressed in traditional chulapo or chulapa costumes during these traditional events.

Concerts during the San Isidro Festival

Every year during the festive season, the streets come alive with free concerts by local and national artists performing folk, pop, rock and electronic music.

Although the full line-up for the 2023 San Isidrio Festival has not yet been announced, it has been confirmed that the Primavera Sound festival will stage four performances at the Matadero Madrid venue on 15 May, whilst the Mad Cool festival has also scheduled several concerts for the 13th.

The Pilgrimage of San Isidro

This religious event is held every 15 May on the Santo Meadow. The pilgrimage begins with a mass at the Chapel of San Isidro, followed by a procession carrying the statue of the saint.

Later, a street party is held in the Pradera de San Isidro, featuring traditional music, Madrid-style stew, chulapos and traditional dances. Family workshops and shows suitable for all ages are also organised. Zarzuela, chotis and other traditional Madrid dances typical of this time of year are a must.

Fireworks

Every year, the skies above Madrid light up with fireworks set off from various locations across the city, marking the end of the festivities. There’s no better way to round off San Isidro than by watching a spectacular show of light and sound!

Traditional food of San Isidro

San Isidro doughnuts are undoubtedly the most popular food during Madrid’s festivities, and are served with a traditional Madrid lemonade made from lemons, sugar, wine and fruit.

There are several types of rosquillas to choose from: the ‘tontas’, which contain egg, and the ‘listas’, covered in icing sugar. There are also Santa Clara rosquillas, topped with white meringue, and the French variety, which contain almonds. Madrid’s bakeries will be full of these traditional treats, so be sure to give them a try!
