The Zarzuela Racecourse
The Hipódromo de la Zarzuela is a historic racecourse that opened in 1941 and is owned by the Spanish state. The beauty and scale of the facilities mean it is regarded as a monument, and one of its most distinctive features is the grandstands, which were designated a “Historic-Artistic Monument” in 1980 and are considered an architectural landmark of Madrid’s Rationalist movement.

La Zarzuela Racecourse enjoys a prime location just 8 km from the city of Madrid. It has a capacity of 6,000 spectators and can accommodate 800 horses, allowing visitors to enjoy the most spectacular races.
2022 Racing Calendar for the Zarzuela Racecourse
The 2022 racing programme at the Hipódromo de la Zarzuela comprises a total of 43 race days and €3,500,300 in prize money.
The racing programme is spread across three seasons: spring, summer and autumn.
The spring season will consist of 17 rounds featuring a total of 107 races, taking place on Sunday mornings from 6 March to 29 May. In June, the races will be held in the afternoon.
The summer (evening) season will consist of a total of 13 race nights and 53 races. Seven race nights will take place on Thursday evenings from 30 June to 11 August, and six on Saturday evenings in July and on Saturday 6 August.
The autumn season will feature 13 race days comprising a total of 78 races, which will take place on Sunday mornings from 11 September to 20 November. Exceptions are Wednesday 12 October (Hispanic Heritage Day) and the special Christmas race day on 29 December, which will feature five races on the synthetic track.
Below is a summary of the main races taking place at the Hipódromo de la Zarzuela in 2022:
Valderas Grand Prix – Fillies’ Handicap: For 3-year-old fillies, to be run on 1 May over a distance of 1,600 metres.
Cimera Grand Prix: Colt Race: For 3-year-old colts, held on 1 May over a distance of 1,600 metres.
Beamonte Stakes: Spanish Oaks: For 3-year-old fillies, to be run on 4 June over a distance of 2100 metres.
Villapadierna Grand Prix: Spanish Derby: For 3-year-old colts and fillies, to be run on 4 June over a distance of 2,400 metres.
Claudio Carudel Grand Prix: For horses aged three years and over, to be held on 19 June over a distance of 1,600 metres. (Spring Mile Grand Prix).
Madrid Grand Prix: For horses aged three years and over, to be held on 25 June over a distance of 2,500 metres. (Spring Long-Distance Grand Prix).
Gran Criterium: For 2-year-old colts and fillies, to be run on 30 October over a distance of 1,600 metres.
Gran Premio de la Hispanidad: For horses aged three years and over, to be run on 12 October over a distance of 1,600 metres. (Autumn Mile Grand Prix).
Duque de Toledo Memorial: For horses aged three years and over, to be run on 16 October over a distance of 2,400 metres. (Autumn Long-Distance Grand Prix).
Villamejor Grand Prix: Spanish St Leger: For 3-year-old colts and fillies, to be run on 25 September over a distance of 2,800 metres.
