Madrid is a city with an incredible architectural heritage, where you can find buildings in a variety of styles, spanning several decades and centuries of history.
If you’re visiting the capital, you should make the most of your time to take a tour of Madrid’s architecture and discover the city’s most iconic buildings.
Architectural Guide to Madrid
Although it’s impossible to list all the architectural sights in Madrid, here are 12 buildings of great beauty and architectural interest that you simply mustn’t miss:
Royal Palace
The Royal Palace is one of the capital’s most impressive buildings and a must-see if you’re in Madrid. If you’re lucky, you might catch the changing of the guard or even witness one of the official events held by the royal family. Built in the 18th century and boasting over 3,400 rooms, this Baroque-style palace is the largest in Western Europe.
Cibeles Palace
Also known as the Palacio de Comunicaciones, it is one of the finest examples of Modernist architecture in Madrid and a true icon of the style. The Palacio de Cibeles is often considered the most beautiful building in Madrid thanks to its immaculate white façade, which serves as the backdrop for many photos taken by tourists visiting the capital.
Bank of Spain
Another of the city’s most photogenic spots, the Bank of Spain is a 19th-century building that perfectly exemplifies the Spanish architecture of the period. In addition to its famous façade, its Art Deco features, the impressive stained-glass window and the clock in the Patio de Operaciones are particularly noteworthy.
White Towers
This concrete colossus is one of the most innovative buildings of the 20th century in Madrid and a landmark of Brutalist and organicist architecture. Its tree-like shape and imposing height make it one of the most striking features of Madrid’s skyline.
Metropolis Building
Dominating Gran Vía is this architectural icon of the capital, which was designed by French architects in 1911. The striking building is undoubtedly one of the most photographed, standing out for its ornamentation and imposing slate dome with gilded details. You can enjoy spectacular views of Gran Vía and the Metropolis Building from The Principal Madrid hotel, also part of the Único Hotels group.
Doré Cinema
As well as screening films from the Madrid Film Archive, the Cine Doré is a beautifully preserved example of Modernist architecture that is well worth a visit.
The Hieronymites
Built in the Gothic style with Renaissance influences, the Church of Los Jerónimos was constructed during the reign of the Catholic Monarchs and forms part of Madrid’s cultural heritage, as well as being one of the capital’s most iconic tourist attractions.
Longoria Palace
This Art Nouveau gem in central Madrid was built in 1904 by the Catalan architect José Grases Riera, emulating the architecture of Gaudí and his contemporaries in Barcelona. It currently serves as the headquarters of the SGAE (General Society of Authors).
Temple of Debod
What is a 2,200-year-old Egyptian temple doing right in the heart of Madrid? It was a gift from Egypt to Spain in 1968, in exchange for the construction of the Aswan Dam to save the monuments of Nubia. It is undoubtedly the city’s most exotic monument and, what’s more, offers stunning panoramic views that are perfect for enjoying, especially at sunset.
Gallardo House
Another example of Modernist architecture in Madrid, Casa Gallardo stands out for its ornate façade. The building has been designated a Site of Cultural Interest and is situated on one of the corners of Plaza de España, making it impossible to miss when visiting Madrid.
Crystal Palace
A must-see if you’re strolling through Retiro Park, the Crystal Palace is one of the most iconic examples of iron architecture. Formerly a greenhouse, the building consists of a metal framework covered in glass, hence its name.
CaixaForum
Opened in 2008, the CaixaForum is housed in a former power station dating from 1900. This industrial building was transformed by the renowned architects Herzog & de Meuron into a cutting-edge structure, whilst retaining its original features, with the addition of a spectacular vertical garden and a metal roof.
