Francisco Giner de los Ríos Foundation
The Free Educational Institution was founded in the 19th Century by a group of university professors under Francisco Giner de los Ríos (1839 – 1915), philosopher, educator and intellectual as a constantly evolving laboratory for new teaching methods, underpinned by a belief that society can be reformed through education.
The Institución Libre de Enseñanza was founded in the 19th century by a group of university lecturers inspired by the philosopher, educator and intellectual Francisco Giner de los Ríos (1839–1915) as a constantly evolving laboratory for new teaching methods, based on the belief that society can be reformed through education.
The architectural complex was completely refurbished in 2014 by Cero9 Architects, with a focus on the green spaces that fill the gaps between the buildings. This approach reflects Francisco Giner de los Ríos’s belief that the landscape was “an educational resource and one of the main products of culture”. These green spaces transform throughout the year as the seasons change; the building façades are regarded as an extension of the garden.
