Completed in 1916, the design of this hospital, which catered to the working class, was ahead of its time. It provided the wards with maximum natural light and ventilation; circulation areas were kept to a minimum through the adoption of a panoptic layout (more commonly used in prisons); and nature was regarded as an integral part of the recovery process. The building ceased to be used as a hospital in 1970 and was subsequently taken over by the Community of Madrid.
