The Photography Trail. Three days of visual arts in Madrid.

Summer brings with it one of the world’s leading photography festivals: PHotoEspaña, a visual, artistic and photographic event that opened its doors on 5 June, featuring over 85 exhibitions, works by 296 artists and almost 80 venues across the city.

The summer programme is looking increasingly appealing, and PHotoEspaña is shaping up to be one of the most interesting events of the warmer months. Running until 1 September, the International Festival of Photography and Visual Arts began in 1998 and has since established itself as a must-see for visitors to the Spanish capital.

Exhibitions at various museums, art spaces and galleries, as well as a range of activities centred on “Déjà vu”, aiming to deconstruct photography and offering visitors the chance to discover the latest trends and projects from leading photographers worldwide.

At Único, we’ve put together a selection of interesting exhibitions near the hotel so you can visit them and enjoy this year’s event.

The first of these is located at the Círculo de Bellas Artes, just a stone’s throw from The Principal, on the other side of Gran Vía, where you can see the exhibition marking the centenary of the start of commercial air transport in Spain: ¡Volar! 100 Years in the Sky, a display of historical photographs presented by the Ministry of Public Works through the ENAIRE Foundation. In the Picasso Room, in the same venue, you can also visit the exhibition “Avant-garde and Propaganda. Russian Books and Magazines in the Lafuente Archive 1913–1941”, which is the second part of the exhibition The Soviet Century, held in the same room last year. Don’t miss the chance to discover another of the city’s main terraces either.

At Sala Alcalá 31, in the Community of Madrid, a solo exhibition dedicated to Darío Villalba is on display, bringing together for the first time almost all of the artist’s most significant works; an artist who sought to reflect the unnameable within the realm of madness and marginalisation.

One of the must-see events is at the Espacio Fundación Telefónica, where a celebration is being held to mark William Klein’s 90th birthday; he is the creator of one of the most notable works of the 20th century, characterised by its clear and striking vision of the heart of modern society: *Manifesto*.

This fantastic festival takes place across a wide range of venues and spaces, transforming Madrid into the world capital of photography and the visual arts. Come and enjoy a unique, fascinating experience that’s perfect for this summer.
