Explore Madrid’s speciality coffee scene and discover the best coffee shops. We’ll guide you through the coffee culture of the Spanish capital.
Coffee arrived in Spain in the 17th century, brought by sailors trading with the East. However, it was not until the 18th century that the drink became popular, with the opening of the first coffee houses in major cities such as Madrid and Seville.
The speciality coffee sector in Madrid continues to innovate year after year, and there is already talk of the ‘fourth wave’ of the coffee craze.
The best speciality coffee shops in Madrid
There is no denying that coffee, in all its forms, is now an integral part of Spanish culture, and there are as many ways to enjoy it as there are lifestyles: from those who see it as a vital necessity to kick-start the day, to those who accompany every conversation and social gathering with a steaming cup, and even those who speak of coffee as an art form that requires time, dedication and knowledge to be appreciated to the full. Whatever your approach, coffee has woven its flavour and aroma into the fabric of our society and has become a symbol of togetherness, energy and delight.
Here are some of our favourite speciality coffee shops in Madrid:
Randall Coffee Roasters: pioneering roasters in the heart of Madrid
Precisely because it is one of the cities where interest in this age-old drink first took root, Madrid is one of the ideal destinations for discovering the finest speciality coffee. One of the pioneers in bringing speciality coffee to Madrid was Randall Coffee Roasters, which opened in 2013. It is a small, cosy café located in the legendary Vallehermoso market, where you can not only sample the finest coffees roasted by the roasters themselves, but also discover coffee-based infusions they have brought back from regions in the East.
Although the space is compact, this little corner is the perfect spot to enjoy the friendly service and pair their wonderful coffees with some of the sweet treats on the menu. And before you leave, don’t forget to visit other traditional market stalls, such as the Alejandro Rodríguez dairy or Cannelle, with its aromas from around the world.
Coffee tasting at Madrid’s only Modbar
You read that right: this is Madrid’s only Modbar café, Misión Café – a venue where the coffee machines are built into the bar to encourage greater interaction between the barista and the customer. Just like at Randall Coffee Roasters, at Misión Café you’ll also find coffee roasted in-house, as well as a delicious selection of homemade pastries, perfect for accompanying the finest brews. If you’re a coffee lover in every sense, you can’t miss their Trinidad: a creation that presents coffee in three different forms—filtered, black and with milk—allowing you to distinguish the nuances of each brewing method.
Unique character and distinction at Umami
Umami, located on Calle de la Alameda, is another iconic spot where you can enjoy the best latte in town: the Pink Latte. A unique creation with hints of beetroot that give it a pink hue and a sweet flavour that enhances its aroma. The café is incredibly cosy, with youthful splashes of colour, walls covered in marker-painted tiles and a mix of vintage and modern furniture.
What’s more, the staff are attentive and friendly, and always show a genuine interest in the world of coffee, ensuring an even more enriching experience for coffee lovers. As you leave the café, we invite you to explore the charming neighbourhood of La Alameda, with its picturesque streets and lively atmosphere. Without a doubt, a visit to Umami is much more than just enjoying a good cup of coffee; it is immersing yourself in the very essence of life in Madrid.
