An unknown route through La Latina

Madrid, the Spanish capital, which, as well as offering wide streets brimming with history and people from all over the world, holds many secrets.

Madrid, the Spanish capital, which, as well as offering wide streets brimming with history and people from all over the world, holds many secrets.

The La Latina neighbourhood is one such place. It is home to exceptional sites such as the Jardín del Príncipe de Anglona, which was created around 1750 and is one of the few 18th-century aristocratic gardens still preserved in the capital. This unique green space was once one of the Prince of Anglona’s luxuries and is now regarded as a quiet, almost unknown gem of Madrid.

As you continue your stroll through the La Latina neighbourhood, we recommend a visit to the Basilica of San Francisco el Grande, situated very close to the Royal Palace, between Calle Bailén and Carrera de San Francisco. This Catholic church boasts a majestic dome – the third largest in diameter in the Christian world – and also houses works by Goya and Zurbarán.

To round off your tour of the lesser-known but unmissable corners of La Latina in Madrid, we recommend spending the last hour of the afternoon exploring the Dalieda de San Francisco, situated next to the church. A botanical garden specialising in dahlias, situated on the site of the former Convent of San Francisco, where legend has it that in 1215 St Francis of Assisi stopped on his pilgrimage southwards. At the far end of the park you’ll find a viewpoint overlooking the western part of the capital, from where you can enjoy one of the city’s finest sunsets.
