Retiro Park
These historic gardens and public park, covering 118 hectares, are one of Madrid’s most important tourist attractions, as well as being a favourite spot for the city’s residents. El Retiro is a Site of Cultural Interest (National Heritage) that first opened its doors to the public in 1767, having previously been the exclusive property of the Royal Family.
The word “retiro” describes this important urban green space, which is now completely surrounded by the Madrid metropolitan area. The park is home to numerous architectural complexes, art galleries, sculptures and landscapes created between the 17th and 21st centuries. A visit here is a must for anyone interested in seeing how the locals enjoy their city.
