Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum

One of Europe’s most important private art collections of the 20th century was established in Madrid in 1992.

The building chosen to house the collection is the Palacio de Villahermosa, which forms part of a cluster of museums and galleries along the Paseo del Prado. The collection assembled by the industrialist Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza, whose fifth and final wife, Carmen Cervera, was once Miss Spain, comprises almost 1,000 works of art dating from the 13th to the 20th century and representing the great masters of Western culture. The museum building was specially restored by Rafael Moneo, with subsequent extensions to adjacent buildings housing more recent additions to the collection.
