Discover Madrid’s wines
Madrid is a major wine-producing region, with over 12,000 hectares devoted to growing grapes for wine production.
Of these, more than 8,000 fall under the Madrid Designation of Origin (DO), making Madrid the only capital city in the world to have its own designation. This was officially approved in 1990, and since then some fifty wineries have joined the scheme, producing 110 wine brands subject to strict regulations and quality control.
Unlike the Mediterranean wine regions, the production area of the DO Vinos de Madrid is subject to extreme weather conditions, with highs exceeding 40°C in summer and sub-zero temperatures in winter. This is divided into four sub-zones: Arganda, Navalcarnero, San Martín and El Molar, each with its own microclimate that gives rise to a wide variety of red, white, rosé and sparkling wines. The most widely grown varieties are Garnacha Tinta, Albillo Real, Malvar-Airen and Tempranillo.
The best wines of Madrid
Although it is a designation of origin that emerged in the shadow of other major Spanish DOs such as Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Penedès, the Madrid DO has been growing and gaining in reputation and quality, competing with other Spanish wines.
Some of the must-try wines from Madrid that can be found in supermarkets are:
- Las Moradas de San Martín: The Garnacha wines produced at Las Moradas are among the most highly regarded in the Madrid Designation of Origin, particularly the white Albillo Real and the red Senda.
- Licinia Wines: Voted Spain’s best red wine in 2009, Licinia’s flagship wine is a staple on the wine lists of Madrid’s finest restaurants. Another award-winning wine from the same winery is Vac Muss, a pioneering wine produced using the Ulises method.
- 4 Monos: this project, born from an idea conceived by four friends, cultivates vineyards in the Sierra de Gredos and is committed to environmentally friendly winemaking, primarily using Garnacha and Albillo Real.
- El Regajal: produced in Aranjuez and one of the most prestigious wines of the Madrid Designation of Origin, this wine from Viñas El Regajal is made from Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Syrah grapes.
